3 & Out w/ West Hancock’s Travis Cook

One question and three answers. Pretty simple, right?

From Carthage to Quincy to West Hancock, Travis Cook has seen some really good football in his days as either player, defensive coordinator or now head coach. But ask any competitor, as Cook is, and you’ll find out the losses are remembered a tad more than the wins.

Because, you know, most hate to lose more than love to win. That’s the nature of playing, making calls or being the head coach.

I decided to pick his brain on a few of the games that still keep him up at night.

Three Games That Still Give Me Nightmares:

2016 1st-Round Playoffs

(As West Hancock head coach) We take the lead with 50 seconds left in the game. St. Thomas More, on a double pass, throws a Hail Mary, our safety tips it, the receiver tips it and then corrals it to run into the end-zone with 30 seconds left on the clock. We couldn’t score when we received the kickoff (final was 44-38).

2009 1st-Round Playoffs

(As QHS DC) We travel to Chicago for 1st-round playoff game and battle with a very athletic Morgan Park football team. We felt we had a 4th-down touchdown taken away from us on a long discussion between the officials on a fullback dive. Our fullback ended up in the end zone but the officials (go together) and put him down at the half-inch line. It really took the wind out of us. We lost the game 16-7.

1994 2nd-Round Playoffs

(As player for Carthage) Blueboys travel to Hardin Calhoun and in a monsoon of rain and a field of mud, lose a heartbreaker, 14-6. Field conditions were an equalizer.
